British Library (Education and Cultural Heritage – B2C & B2B)

Platforms: Web, Mobile
Role: End-to-End Product Design and Product Management
The British Library, the national library of the United Kingdom, houses one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world, spanning over 170 million items across nearly every known language and format. As Product Design and Management Lead, I guided the complete redesign of its digital platform—an ecosystem of more than 28,000 web and mobile pages—focused on accessibility, usability, and scalability. The goal was to create a modern, inclusive digital experience that reflected the institution’s global leadership in education, research, and cultural preservation.
I led the end-to-end design process, beginning with extensive user research, stakeholder interviews, and data analysis to identify the unique needs of researchers, educators, students, and general visitors. From these insights, I developed detailed personas, journey maps, and information architecture models that streamlined access to the library’s vast digital holdings. I directed the design of wireframes, prototypes, and final UI layouts optimized for WCAG 2.0 AA accessibility compliance, exceeding all mandated UK government standards. Leveraging a headless architecture with React and Sitecore, I ensured the platform was modular, scalable, and prepared for future European Accessibility Act requirements. Rigorous usability testing validated the design’s clarity, performance, and global accessibility.
The redesigned British Library platform achieved full accessibility certification and modernized its digital presence while improving usability and engagement across devices. Search efficiency, navigation, and content discoverability increased significantly, supported by SEO optimization and robust performance benchmarks. The project was delivered on schedule despite an aggressive timeline and is now recognized internally as a model for large-scale, accessible digital transformation. The result is a future-ready platform that democratizes access to knowledge and reinforces the British Library’s role as a cultural and technological leader in the digital age.
